Overview

Native to Bosnia the Tornjak is mountain Sheepdog that is also known as Bosnian-Herzegovinian and Croatian Shepherd Dog (Official English Name). It was being used to herd and to guard the livestock as a farmyard guarding dog. It is an even tempered dog. It is a cordial, fearless, quiet, intelligent, courageous, and self-determined and fully greatness. It is fierce in guarding the property when working, trustful and cannot be bribed and wary of strangers. It can protect its owner, herd and property with life. It is very cordial to the familiar individuals. Dedicated and fully devoted to owner and like to be firm in presence of owner. It is affectionate to the closely related family members. Intelligent, easy to train, the Tornaks learns rapidly and never forget things easily performs jobs assigned to him. It stands hardy and strong in snowy seasons night; even these dogs can lie in snow for hours. The Environment made it a very hardy and healthy breed; it also performed as a great watchdog. The Tornjak is not suggested for apartment livings. These dogs are needed spaces and will do okay with at least a yard of large size. Its coat is protective to it so it may abide happily outdoors. This is also best fit to a family with ample spaces in the home. It would have needed to take on daily walk. The height of Male Tornjak is 25 to 27 inches and for females are 23 to 25 inches. Tornjak History

Tornjak was created in Bosnia, Herzegovina and Croatia and its existence there is sine thousand years. It was initially registered with name Kanis montanus that was translated as Mountain dog, but the native populace calls it Tornjak meaning enclosure for sheep and cattle. The Tornjak was again on May 9, 1981 registered as autochthonous breed under the name Bosnian-herzegovinian sheepdog – Tornjak” Documentations traces its relation with Tibetan Mastiff or from todays Iran. The atmosphere had developed a very healthy and vigorous canine with modest requirements of food and shelter. It appears into the history as a great watchdog. It is recognized by United Kennel Club August 18, 2011.

Tornjak with children and other pets

.The Tornjaks are rather good with children and family members if socialized with care in early ages. However, it is wary of strangers but not overly aggressive toward them.

Tornjak Care and Grooming

The dogs outer coat is long, straight and hard while under coat is fully and dense. It may not be easy to maintain its long coat. it can be a time consuming job, it may need to have regular grooming.

Tornjak Training

Intelligent, easy to train the Tornjaks are able to learn things quickly and not forget them easily. The objective of the training should be to gain status of pack leader. It is natural instinct of a dog to have an order within pack. This dog must be trained under a firm, solid and dominant single pack leader. And it would reinforce the ruled and regulations that are clearly defined. It is only best way to train these dogs.
