Overview

Remarkably massive dog with a dignified manner, Tibetan Mastiff is a distant, watchful and guardian dog breed. Tibetan Mastiff has an uncertain origin but some fore more written accounts suggest a large dog in China about 1100 BC. Yet, an ancient breed of dog is Tibetan Mastiff. Due to their highly independent nature it may not like to contribute in planned activities like agility or obedience. Tremendously sovereign and intelligent breed has its schedule so that for their safety must be kept controlled while exercising. Although, it is rather active outdoor but can be moderately quiet in door. Remember, it is an outstanding protector of their property and family equally so it cannot be easy to bring the friends and others at home. A cuddly and friend to the family Tibetan Mastiffs are somewhat caring to the children but can be rather distant to the other dogs and strangers. It has a sober and tender expression with an enormous double coat. It comes in brown, black, blue/grey with or with no tan markings and so many shades of gold. Though, it sheds once in a year but requires regular brushing. Tibetan Mastiff has great, robust and big bones frame. The Tibetan Mastiff seems to be vigorous and significant. They are large size dogs. Their height is 25 - 28 inches and weight is 140 - 170 pounds. In Europe some owners claim their dog has a weight of 220 pounds. The life expectancy for this breed is about 15 years. It may prone to thyroid problems, hip dysplasia, ear infections and skin conditions, Demyelinative Neuropathy (CIDN). This breed is not for everyone so the people who know how to train a dog with consistent and firm methods dominantly can train it. It may welcome a daily brisk and good walk but never be overexerted.

Tibetan Mastiff History

With unsure history Tibetan Mastiff’s origin is still unknown, yet believed it is one among ancient large dogs, perhaps source for all mountain dogs and mastiffs. For many centuries, it had worked with grouping of Lhasa Apso and taken charge with guarding places and temples as well. The England’s Queen Victoria was given first time this dog in middle of 1800s. It came to U.S. in 1970 and used as foundation stock and in 1974, The American Tibetan Mastiff Association was created. AKC recognized it in 2006.

Tibetan Mastiff Appearance

Tibetan Mastiff has great, robust and big bones frame. Legs are long. The breed possesses wide head and a square muzzle. Eyes are deep set and ears are hanging down in V-shape. It possesses a deep chests, muscular neck and straight back. Its tail is well-feathered and sometimes can carry over the rear. In general, the Tibetan Mastiff seems to be vigorous and significant. It has a thick immense double coat which comes in bluish gray, black and brown with or with not tan marking sometimes has gold shades.

. Loyal and the affectionate, Tibetan Mastiff, with decorous manners is mild yet calm friendly to family members. It is a beloved companion of their family. It can be polite and caring with children but somewhat suspicious and distant to the other dogs and unfamiliar persons. It has an outstanding instinct to protect their property and family as well. It has an independent nature and must be socialized and properly trained to overcome its governing nature. Yet domineering and independent but it would like to have attention of family.

Due to their highly independent nature it may not like to contribute in planned activities like agility or obedience. This breed can be tender and caring to the children but somewhat aloof and reserve with other dogs and unfamiliar persons equally. It can be friendly to the all family members with a great deal of well socialization and training.

Tibetan Mastiff Care and Grooming

Though, it sheds once a year but requires regular brushing to upkeep of its smartness. This breed is easy to groom. Brushing and combing is weekly but when shedding season starts daily brushing is mandatory. Bath is as required.

it may prone to thyroid problems, hip dysplasia, ear infections and skin conditions, Demyelinative Neuropathy (CIDN). This disorder will be obvious in pupps 7 to 10 weeks of age and the puppies can die by four months of age.

this breed is not for everyone so the people who know how to train a dog with consistent and firm methods dominantly can train it. Their handler or trainer must be domineering and so strict in rules of leadership. Strong and resolute owners are welcomed by this breed. With a great influential and positive training this high valued canines can do good in agility and obedience as an extra ordinary guard dog.

Too big to apartment life, not good in apartment livings. It requires a fenced yard and ample space. It loves to dig and be careful when keep it in a fenced yard. It may welcome a daily brisk and good walk but never be overexerted.
