Overview

A working dog, with a small package, the Kooikerhondje is spaniel type dog breed, it is one of Dutch dog breeds. It was being used as eendenkooi (duck trap) to trap ducks. In 17th and 18th centuries, these dogs were very popular, and it could be seen in paintings of that time. Though, once it was comparatively unknown in the United States, Scandinavia and Canada, but now it is gaining fame quickly. A duck decoy dog, originally bred in Holland, it carries a plumed white tail, waves it cheerfully to attract and to lure the ducks to follow into the Endenkooi. It can be utilized to catch vermin. It is off-square to its proportions with moderate posture and bones. The temperament of the Kooikerhondje rather depends on the environment he is living in. However, it is well-behaved dog with an alert, friendly and good nature, also very playful and sociable dog. Tenderness is combined with a lively and happy attitude. More than willing to please, the Kooikerhondje is attentive and intelligent breed. It is a dog that is very adaptable, having the tendency to turn into a mood as the situation demands, from quiet to lively. It may tend to get well with kids and can behave smartly with other dogs and cats if raised together. Kooikerhondje History

The breed was developed in the Netherlands about 16th century to lure or to drive the ducks into ‘coin”. Most probably the dog that was used to drive or to lure ducks was initially known as “Kooiker’s hondjes”, the same dog is believed to be the ancestors of Kooikerhondje. After world war-II about to extinct, but it was rescued by Broness van Hardenbroek van Ammerstol. The Dutch Kennel Club recognized this breed officially in 1971. Now it has been transported to other countries and is recognized. It is recognized in Canada and U.S as a pure breed and gaining popularity rapidly, but it is comparatively unknown in North America. It is also accepted into the AKC/FSS program and it will be a sporting Group dog when it will pass the test and fully recognized by the AKC. Some Historians said that the Kooikerhondje has probably played a very vital role in the development of the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.

Spaniel like sporting dog, the Kooikerhondje is a flashy white and a red small size breed.
