In mid of 19th century, the Croatian and Slovene breeders originated the Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound. This breed was created by cross-matting of French Griffon Vendeen with the Istrian Short-haired Hounds. In 1861, first time this breed participated in a conformation show in Vienna. These dogs are still are used as fox, hare, rabbit and wild-boar hunting dogs. The sizes can vary from dog to dog because the dog is bred primarily for hunting so performance is more emphasized than appearance. The Istrian Coarse-Haired Hound is primarily bred and developed for hunting of different kinds of games, it is more hunting dog than a companion so it may tend self-governed and challenging for training.
