A Norwegian breed, the Hygenhund is from the hound group, a medium sized dog with firm back and rectangular body. Sometimes it is referred as Hygen dog, it is suitable for the active families who can spend a lot of time with this dog. In the 19th Century, the breed was created by Hygen, a Norwegian breeder from many types of hounds. The purpose of its development was to hunt different types of small games including foxes, raccoons, and rabbits. It is a hunter with too stamina to traverse arctic terrain for prolong periods of time tirelessly. Since, the dog is wonderful hunting dog and an outstanding family companion. The breed is not popular outside of Norway and is a rare breed. The breed is energetic, lively and spirited with a pleasant personality. These dogs like to be busy at work, tasks or play. The breed can excel on the strong and trustful relations with the owner and wants the guidance and leadership of the owner. It is an intelligent breed that is easily trainable. The Hygenhunds are loyal, obedient, affectionate, spirited and loving dogs. With willing to learn and eager to please the owner capability, the Hygenhunds are easy to train. They will respond well to basic commands and training. The Hygenhund is not suggested for apartments, as it is active outdoors and get pleasure from outdoors long walks. In addition they wished to have ample room to roam, run, or play. The shiny and thick coat is with straight hairs that are easy to groom, frequent brushing is needed to maintain its shiny coat. The height of the Hygenhund is 19 to 24 inches and the weight is 44 to 55 pounds. The life expectancy of the Hygenhund is 10 to 12 years.

It was created to hunt small games including fox, raccoon and rabbits. The result of the Hygenhund’s breeding program created the hounds that thrive on tracking and retrieving the different games even in tough conditions. It is a hunter with too stamina to traverse arctic terrain for prolong periods of time tirelessly. Since, the dog is wonderful hunting dog and an outstanding family companion.

Hygenhund Life Expectancy

The life expectancy of the Hygenhund is 10 to 12 years.

Hygenhund Appearance

With a broad skull, the head of the breed is triangular, the eyes are dark. The ears are somewhat wide. The muzzle of the breed is medium in size. The neck is clean and long. The body is solid, whereas the top-line is leveled. With compact feet, the legs of the breed are muscular and hard. The gait is well balanced. Though, the dogs carry the tail high but never curl it up over back. With straight hairs the coat is shiny and thick. The coat colors are red, yellow, and black with bright chestnut or chestnut with or with no black shading. The colors sometimes found with white markings.

The height of the Hygenhund is 19 to 24 inches and the weight is 44 to 55 pounds.

It depends on the socialization, if you have socialized with kids and other pets the dog can get alone with them. These dogs must be socialized and train from early ages.

Hygenhund Care and Grooming

The shiny and thick coat is with straight hairs that is easy to groom, frequent brushing is needed to maintain its shiny coat. When necessary the dog should have a fresh bath.

Hygenhund Health Issues

The Hygenhund is a healthy and energetic breed, some may prone to arthritis, hip dysplasia, von Willebrand's Disease, bloat and sensitivity to anesthesia.

Hygenhund Training

The breed is willing to learn and eager to please the owner, the Hygenhunds are easy to train. They will respond well to basic commands and training. It is able to learn and obey the commands as wished by the handler. The key to success in training is establishing of trust and regard. They will respond well if the handler is caring, patient and more confident. The firm, gentle, consistent and positive training with repetitive tasks may do well.

Hygenhund Exercise

The Hygenhund is not suggested for apartments, as it is active outdoors and get pleasure from outdoors long walks. In addition they wished to have ample room to roam, run, or play. The energetic Hygenhunds need a lot of daily exercises. The enclosed yard can fulfill indoor exercise requirements.
