An extinct breed of Pariah dog, the Hawaiian Poi Dog was used by local Hawaiians as a spiritual defender of their children and as a source of food. The country of the origin is America. More than 1,000 years ago, the Hawaiian Poi Dogs came to Hawaii with first Polynesians, the first settlers of the Hawaii Island. In those times, the dog was an important part the Polynesians’ life. The Hawaiian Poi Dog was short coated and their short coat was come in various color ranges. With destined belly, short legs and fatten posture, the body of the dog was low and barrel shaped. Not a pretty dog, the Hawaiian Poi Dog was playful and frank. Seldom bark, lazy and fat dog, the Hawaiian Poi Dog was nice with the tribes. These dogs were fed by paste made from ground, baked and fermented roots of taro so they tended to be sluggish and not enough smart dogs. These dogs were liked to play with kids, however, too slow to catch the fruits kids playfully threw at these dogs. These dogs found amongst hogs and acted more like hogs than dogs. Being a stubborn dog it would have been not easy to train; to train it might be a challenge. With willful nature and disobedient behavior the laziness was another obstacle in training. The Hawaiian Poi Dogs lived with the tribes, sleeping with kids but also were eaten up. These dogs were fat and sluggish, waddling around as hogs. The smooth and short coat of the breed would had been simple to care and easy to groom. The height of the Hawaiian Poi Dog was 13 to 16 inches and weight is 15 to 35 pounds.

In early years of the 19th century, other some dogs started to breed with the Hawaiian Poi dogs and these dogs were the no longer pure dogs. Later, at the Honolulu Zoo, a breed program was begun in attempts to recreate the breed, however, after twelve years the program finished up at the failure.
