Overview

Missive in size the Belgian Mastiff is considered as an extinct breed but some Dog fanciers in Belgium are striving to re-create the breed. Originally this breed been used commonly for heavy jobs as like guarding farms and carts pulling etc. the dedicated Belgian Mastiff was known for its devotion to owner, affection and tenderness. It is friendly toward kids but have aggression toward strangers, unfamiliar and other dogs. Bob tail is the distinctive feature. Working dogs, the Belgian Mastiff has been being used in World War by military to pull the carts, arms & ammunition and or transporting wounded military personnel. In result of World War the breed was decreased in numbers significantly. Belgian Mastiffs have robust, muscular build and notable strength. Well developed skull of the breed is well set on the broad forehead. Equally proportioned to head the ears are hanging over either side. Obedience training and early socialization is necessary during puppyhood. A solid, dedicated, consistent and patient trainer is required to avoid behavioral disorder in breed. Being a working and powerful dog it needs abundant amount of daily exercises to burn out its energy. Minimal Grooming is needed for sleek shorthaired coat. Coat colors include brown-brindle, red, fawn or black with dark masks and white markings. Height of the breed is 27 - 32 inches and weight is 99 - 110 pounds. The life expectancy of the Belgian Mastiff is 11 to 14 years.

Belgian Mastiff History

it is stated by Belgian Kennel Club that the original Belgian Mastiff has been extinct. However, the FCI has placed the breed on their suspended list. Since, a working group of Dog fanciers within Belgium is re creating the breed’s standard. In Belgium a breeder is succeeded to re create the Belgian Mastiff breed and name of his “master” dog is named Bacon and it has been shown in many dog shows and earned exceptional admiration. Once it passed the various committees then it will place at “stage” of FCI for 10 years. It closely resembled to French hounds and on this base it is commonly considered that the original breed was originated in France. Later on, its temperamental features were changed when it has been exported to Belgium.

Belgian Mastiff Life Expectancy

Normally, the Life expectancy of Belgian Mastiff is about 11 to 14 years.

Belgian Mastiff Appearance

Well developed skull of the breed is well set on the broad forehead. Equally proportioned to head the ears are hanging over either side. The nose of the breed was black in color with well defined muzzle. The eyes of the breed were deep set and coloring black and brown. Well muscled neck was very thick however chest was somewhat deep with ribs that were well sprung. It possesses a shorthaired sleek coat. Coat colors include brown-brindle, red, fawn or black with dark masks and white markings.

Height of the breed is 27 to 32 inches and weight is 99 to 110 pounds.
