Large in size Ariegeois Pointer Pointer is gung dog type pointing dogs, native to France. Word Braque de l’Ariège is translated into English and known as the Ariege Pointing Dog or Ariege Pointer. Primarily the breed is kept as a hunting dog and not as a pet or show-dog. The breed is well known for its energetic character. Generally, it excels on owners attention and leadership qualities. The breed is so much intelligent and its sense of smell is excellent which makes it brilliant hunting dog. it is somewhat independent and headstrong. It can be difficult to train, however it is not suitable for indoor livings but it is kept as house dog. Ariege Pointer is obedient, loving, loyal and as well as affectionate. It has been used by hunters to support them in matters of hunting and retrieving the little games as fox and rabbits. It hunts by scent not by sight or speed so that it is known as pointing dog. It points the muzzle toward quarry. It also denoted as gundog because having and quality of very view dogs. The history of the breed is still covered in the veil of past but some sources said it was developed late 1900s and early 20s. Typically, the Area of its origin is commonly known as somewhere foothills of Southern France and Pyrenees Mountains, particularly the region of Ariege. Though, comperatively it is a recently created breed but ancestors of the breed are ancient. It is the result of crossing Grand Bleu de Gascogne and Grand Gascon Saintongeois hounds with local Briquet dog.

Ideally the head of the breed is long, angular and narrow over zygomatic arches. The straight muzzle of the Ariege Pointing Dog is longer and sometime even a bit convex. The lines of skull and muzzle are generally rather divergent from one another. Noses of the breed can be pin or pale brown it is depends on the coat’s color. The color of eyes, that are well-opened and larger, is also depended on coat color; it may be brown or dark amber. Ears are setting on the level of eyes or below, quite long and droopy. Although hanging downward but not so close to head. The over all, it strikes a gentle, intelligent and friendly look.

It will generally do well with other dogs but can chase or injure non-canine pets so it is not recommended for homes that are with small animals. It can be good with kids also but reserved with strangers.

The coat of the breed requires a minimal grooming, never professional grooming is needed. It requires only brushing on regular basis; owner should do clean its ear regularly to avoid any infection. It is described as low to no shedding breed, but might shed.

For the reason of stubbornness and self-governing it will be challenging to train them, it can get bored easily and also impatient with having repetition of training. It respect and trust the owner but successful training needs a lot of experience an patience with confidence. The trainer of the breed must be gentle, firm and confident.

It is a hunting dog of pointing and gundog type, it is an energetic and tireless breed of French region and it would have a need of abundant exercises. At least 60 minutes exercise is very beneficial, the vigorous and the daily physical activities are much supporting for the breed to satisfy itself. The breed like to run and makes a wonderful companion for jogging, and truly yearn the opportunity to run around off lead in safely fenced area. It is unsuitable for apartment livings and not kept in homes having no yards. Preferably it will be well in houses with large yards. If this dog is not exercised properly may get some behavioral issues and tend to be destructive.
